technically, I would say ‘no’ for the following reasons:
1) the quality and size of the lens on P&S can’t match those on SLR.
2) the SLR has more manual options to let photographer correct / adjust the outcome.
However, a decent P&S camera and the firmware nowaday is built good enough to match what SLR can delivery. But most ppl still forgot the MAJOR FACTOR is actully the user himself/herself.
My conclusion is a decent P&S with skills could easily take better photos than a pro SLR camera but lack of skills.
In perfect lighting, with near. on-moving subjects, in posed pictures, you can get virtually identical images with the better compact digitals.
But, when the light is low, changing, or mixed…
When the subject far away, or in the middle of action…
When the environment and the subject challenge you…
Then a dslr is the best tool.
Bigger sensor for sharper photos, interchangeable lenses to suit your needs, and a camera designed as an instrument of your creativity, and not as a fashion statement.
Although I haven’t seen any tests yet the Sigma DP1 may come close since it has the same size sensor as a regular DSLR.
